Founded in 1996, Nhimbe has evolved from one of Africa’s premier exporters of prepared and premium vegetable exporters to a supplier of blueberries, raspberries, and peas for export. Tobacco is also grown under contract for export via BAT, while seed maize, crisping potatoes and juicing tomatoes are contracted for domestic consumption. United Exports has granted Nhimbe, through Ngepi Trust, exclusive rights to grow its Oz Blu range of low chill blueberry varieties in Zimbabwe. These varieties flower and yield earlier enabling Nhimbe to access the higher prices that prevail in August to November period. Over the years Nhimbe has acquired a strong international customer base in the UK, EU and South Africa markets. The association with United Exports is governed by Grower and Marketing. A raspberry trial, a tripartite arrangement with United Exports and Total World Produce UK is being evaluated.
Operations are based on Rakodzi, Sable Range and Churchill farms that are situated 70 kms east of Harare at the advantageous high altitude of +/-1,400 to 1,600 m above sea level. These farms, formerly developed and operated by Mitchell & Mitchell, have a well-developed infrastructure, dams and irrigation, a dedicated 33kVa electricity supply. Operations are headquartered on Rakodzi, eight kms from Marondera town, where a state-of-the-art pack house and cooling facility is situated. Production currently includes blueberries, trial raspberries and strawberries as well as fresh vegetables for export. Contracted tobacco, potatoes, tomatoes, and seed maize form part of the rotation along with onions as a cash crop. Peaches and nectarines are grown on Churchill primarily for the regional and domestic markets.
Nhimbe Fresh is the operating company through which all production and packing operations in Zimbabwe are managed. An experienced and effective management team is supported by a large and well-trained work force produce the crops to the international standards. The pack house receives, chills grades and packs all export produce through an existing state of the art and BRC accredited packing facility, situated on Rakodzi Estates, Marondera.
